Throwback Thursday: Taking Ages

Throwback Thursday: Taking Ages

It’s issue 83 and it’s Benji Haworth. He’s talking about middle-age- is it really as daunting as people make it out to be?

How old are you? I’m not a young man any more. I’m not an old man yet, either. I’m not even sure I’d be that pleased with being labelled as middle-aged, even though that is seemingly the only label left for me. ‘Middle-aged’ has just such a depressing vibe to it. It’s basically saying ‘you are not young and exciting any more but you aren’t as interesting or worthy of respect as an old person’. No Young Persons railcard. No Senior Citizens bus pass. Wherever you go, you’re paying top whack because you’re a middle-aged meh.

  1. I love this article it sums me up to a tee I’ve tried lots of other sports but always come back to MTB. Don’t know why apart from I really love it. I may never be the best or win any prizes but just to be out on the hills and get the thrill of riding up and down nothing beats it. Worst case I join the red socks brigade and if I do I will always have a soft spot for Mtb and would open a gate any day for a rider

  2. As a cancer recovering 66 year old Mountain Biker I say stick at it! Im still riding, still enjoying riding and still hunting for more fitness, in order to ride further and have more fun! You can’t beat it!

  3. I’m 58. I cycled 37 kms over Lakeland on Wednesday doing 1300 meters of climbing. I never normally account these things but my mate had a Garmin. When I got home I wondered aloud to my 30 year old riding companion- how much longer am I going to be able to do this? I’m pleased to report that while he is much fitter and a much more able rider, he was similarly knackered.
Good on you Slofox…….. Keep doing it.

  4. Just a thought. I once went up Kilimanjaro and one of the blokes was…92. We’ve got a while yet before the excuse will hold up to close scrutiny (42)…
