Throwback Thursday – Pedal Power

Throwback Thursday – Pedal Power

I’ve never strayed before, but the lure of something new tempted me. I didn’t mean to be unfaithful, it just happened – the oldest cliché, but you can’t help what you feel, can you? There’s no easy way to explain it, put it down to a mid-life crisis, but I just felt I had to give it a go or I’d regret it forever. It’s almost regressing, going back to the fancy-free schooldays – you know, like getting in touch with your old flame via Facebook – but trying to learn something fresh at the same time.

Yes, you’re right, I’m hopeless and far too old for all this, but I am fortune’s fool, just to plunder Romeo and Juliet for the right phrase.  I know when all this is out in the open there’s no going back, but in the long run, it’s for the best. You know what I’m going to say, don’t you?

That’s right, I’ve decided to learn how to ride with flat pedals.

Barney Marsh takes the word ‘career’ literally, veering wildly across the road of his life, as thoroughly in control as a goldfish on the dashboard of a motorhome. He’s been, with varying degrees of success, a scientist, teacher, shop assistant, binman and, for one memorable day, a hospital laundry worker. These days, he’s a dad, husband, guitarist, and writer, also with varying degrees of success. He sometimes takes photographs. Some of them are acceptable. Occasionally he rides bikes to cast the rest of his life into sharp relief. Or just to ride through puddles. Sometimes he writes about them. Bikes, not puddles. He is a writer of rongs, a stealer of souls and a polisher of turds. He isn’t nearly as clever or as funny as he thinks he is.
