Throwback Thursday – Days of Klunker

Words and pictures by Cass Gilbert.

Urban Dictionary definition of Klunker: An automobile, or occasionally another object, that is in poor condition due to mechanical problems, age, damage or other issues.Klunker - Version 3

The bike in question was sold to me by Val, whose gentle manner, fist-length beard and well-worn Paul Components cycling cap made him a reassuring seller. A short spin round the block revealed a wonderfully smooth ride that belied three decades of existence, and certainly seemed worth every cent of the $200 price tag we’d settle upon.

Barney Marsh takes the word ‘career’ literally, veering wildly across the road of his life, as thoroughly in control as a goldfish on the dashboard of a motorhome. He’s been, with varying degrees of success, a scientist, teacher, shop assistant, binman and, for one memorable day, a hospital laundry worker. These days, he’s a dad, husband, guitarist, and writer, also with varying degrees of success. He sometimes takes photographs. Some of them are acceptable. Occasionally he rides bikes to cast the rest of his life into sharp relief. Or just to ride through puddles. Sometimes he writes about them. Bikes, not puddles. He is a writer of rongs, a stealer of souls and a polisher of turds. He isn’t nearly as clever or as funny as he thinks he is.

  1. Having purchased a ’88 Overbury and built it up in a mixed bag of period suntour and shimano gear, I must confess that after a couple of big rides, my nostalgia did not act as an anticeptic to the comfort a modern bike brought me. Having first ridden my Raleigh maverick across most of the Borders in the late eighties, I cover far more ground far more comfortably from a 80mm full sus 29er now. And don’t have the pain that the old bikes brought me…. I am in my forties man, I need a comfortable saddle, decent bars and grips and some gears that index and work never mind keeping my shins intacted from my bear trap knives for pedals.
