He's probably right.

Having said that, given that he's at St A's he may well be criticising the middle classes from a different vantage point, like a bloke I was there with who complained there were too many middle class people on our course, and who then turned out to be the heir to an Indian prince.

Andy

DOI - spent three cold years at St Andrews; there are an unfeasible number of braying Hoorays & Sloanes there as they couldn't get into Oxbridge or Durham, studying not-exactly-rigorous courses (eg. divinity, history of art) which seemingly prepare one for a career in international finance.

I resent that generalisation, I'm not middle class. And neither were my crab cakes.

Can you be a working class toff, or an upper class pit worker, or are you a toff or scrubber because your parents were?

You were lucky.

When we were young, our father (God rest his soul) used to shoot us at point-blank range with a .44 Magnum. In the eye. Before dismembering us with a B+Q Own Brand non-reciprocating chain saw, then dissolving our remains in Hydroflouric Acid.

But you never saw us complain, oh no.

And if you were to tell that to the youth of today....

Class.

it raises a point - is your class who you are or where you came from?

I'd expect that for most people, one is considerably easier to define than the other.

I was born in a Lancashire cotton town to a family of farmers. I couldn't have been born more working class if I popped out bedecked with a flat cap.

These days I'm a "senior engineer" for a leading IT Managed Services / Telecommunications company (by royal appointment); my partner is a Social Media Consultant; I drive a two year old Mondeo Titanium. Yet, I still live in a, frankly, shitty terrace in East Lancs and I'm earning about half what I should be.

I went to University. I was too busy spodding to come away with anything of value. I mountain bike, I rock climb, I run, I power kite, I've jumped out of aeroplanes, I've snow-bladed, I like to read novels, I like rock music, I enjoy sci-fi and fantasy. I've been known to read comic books. In a past life I've run around in forests with rubber swords (albeit briefly), I've GMed RPGs, I play board games.

I spend a quantity of my offensively poor income on gigs, holidays, gadgets and technology, films and music and video games and assorted media. I'm currently nurturing an interest in photography and trying to work out whether to buy a DSLR or not. I've built and launched model rockets. For a while I rode a Honda CB500, till I couldn't afford to rebuild it and it had to go.

I had a World of Warcraft habit for a couple of years, but I'm clean now. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs (and apart from trying dope and not seeing the point, I never have). I drink too much. I like single malts, real ale and good red wine. I've spent (*cough*, considerably) over fifty pounds on a bottle of whisky before now.

I don't do politics. I don't know whether I'm left wing or right wing, the terms are alien to me, and I've been accused of being both at various times. I don't do religion, I believe that it's a man-made invention to control the masses borne out of a need to provide easy answers to difficult questions in a time of ignorance, and I despair that otherwise intelligent people still fall for it in the 21st Century.

I love my (small) family, my partner, my friends. I have a sense of justice, I hate theft, vandalism, litter and other first world problems. I want to live somewhere where I can leave my bike outside overnight and it'll still be there in the morning. I actually live somewhere where I get twitchy if my bike's out of sight for longer than 30 seconds without a lock on it.

So. The million dollar question is.

Anyone care to tell me what class I am? Cos y'know, I'm buggered if I know.

I have no idea of class distinctions, in the wonderful world of tazzy there are only three grades:
1 people i like,
2 people I don't like
3 people I haven't formed an opinion off yet due to insufficient data.

my world view like me is a very simple happy little place.

Working class honest hard working etc you would have earned more money and left east lancs if you were more aspirational. Middle class folk always want to better themselves [ or be better than common folk] semi detached garage foreign holidays etc.

Stoner I dont think you can ever truly leave your class behind you. Is lord prescott in the same class as hereditary peers?

some out dated hierarchical system

In what way is it "outdated"..............do we now live in a classless society ?

Or are you suggesting that the system is now somehow different ? If so, how is it different to how it was 50 or 100 years ago ?

I see no difference between myself or anybody we're all apes, we all gurn when having a poo anything else is mere smoke and mirrors.

everyone is of equal value because it doesn't matter what you pretend to be we all die in a very short time, so why waste your brief existence finding things to hate about others rather than just being happy within yourself?

man you are messed up

I'm with yer there Tazz. All the way. You can allow yourself to be put in a box, compartmentalised, categorised, labelled, if you want to. Many people find this safe and comfortable. Gives them a sense of place, belonging, grounding.

I mean, the likes of Stoner like to see me as scum; I'm sure it helps them feel better about themselves, that they are somehow 'superior' to me, but I'm not really bothered. 'Class' is all about insecurity and the perpetuation of the myth that folk are somehow different according to birth, location, background, wealth etc etc. we're not. It's all a construct, of course. Designed by those with power, in order to maintain power and keep the rest of us meek and subservient. As Tazzy points out, we all get the runs or a bit bunged up from time to time; the act of defecation is a great leveller.

I mean, even Her Maj Queen Liz (Gawd bless 'er) gets a right eye-popping 'headshaker' on now and then, I bet. Might even be prone to the odd prolapse now and then at her age, I'd imagine. It's very possible.

Must be all that rich food...

Are farmers working class?

Aren't they? In Lancashire? I'm not talking about the Bristol Young Farmers' Institute here.

That told me all I needed to know if i wanted to know anything about how to categorise you socially

And that response provides me with reciprocal information. Mind you, it's a very -nice- Mondeo.

you would have earned more money and left east lancs if you were more aspirational.

Or willing to take more risks, maybe.

do people honestly define themselves by some out dated hierarchical system?

Evidently some people do, or this thread wouldn't exist.

Personally, I don't believe that 'class' is relevant any more and that this whole hybrid "upper middle" business is an attempt to retro-fit modern socio-economics into a no-longer appropriate mould. Which, I guess, is where I was coming from in my wordy post back there.

The concept of class is an attempt to fit an entire country into three groups. That's going to work. What class is my next door neighbour, Mr Khan?

everyone is of equal value

Oh I see, different classes don't exist because that wouldn't fit into your own personal moral code.
I didn't realise it was that easy, ie, you could simply "wish away" different social classes.

But hang on, you said it was an "out dated hierarchical system" ...... so they did once exist ? When did they cease to exist then ?

Let me guess............when you decided that they no longer existed ? 💡

I take it from your stance your "class" is a defining part of your character construct hence your blind adherence to a role allocated to you by the will of another?

is he a pharmacist? or perhaps own a shop or does he run a taxi firm or teach, maybe he makes kites unfortunately I cannot tell from his name now if it was Ralph and pronounced Raif and ended with Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes i could have a better guess.

elfin if you want to think your upbringing and class somehow mirrors Prince charles and his off spring then that is your choice. Reality proves this is not a pure meritocracy so class does matter we can measure social mobility for example - call it advantage if you like rather than class. it is why,no matter what you did, you wont live in a crown castle and he always would

EDIT CM does this radicall drop [lets ignore whether this bit is true of false for the moment] to about half suggest the end of class then ?

Excellent response I assume being classless just means you can post random images rather than defend your view

Elfin excellent use of Mr Khan 😆

ernie you seem an angry grumpy little soul

Because I question whether social classes can be simply "wished away" by waving a magic wand ?

Or is there another reason for your suggestion that I'm "an angry grumpy little soul" ?

.

BTW, RE : I take it from your stance ......

I haven't taken any "stance" in this thread. However I am aware that different social classes do exist.

But that's probably because I don't live with the fairies.
