Has anybody ridden anywhere in South Africa?

I have a five week placement there this July, based in KwaZulu-Natal in the North East. I'll be staying in Ngwelezane, near Richards Bay. Pietermaritzberg isn't too far away, so will try and get there, but there's not much info about on the web. Anybody ridden PMB, or anywhere else worth a visit? I'll have time to travel a little way for worthwhile ventures!
Cheers!

Have a look for this book http://www.southafrica.net/blog/en/posts/entry/mountain-biking-in-south-africa-more-top-mtb-trails

Read a bit on thehubsa.co.za forum

and do chat to the locals before you head out there is some great stuff around but some area's have some unwelcome caracters hanging around too.

I was last in Pietermaritzburg in September for a 6 day trek out off there best riding week off my life

Only on a touring bike....

However the guys at Pyga ( http://www.pygaindustries.com/) are always posting loads of stuff on Facebook so I can say for sure there's no shortage of great riding, and seems to be a very active "scene" out there - may be worth making contact with them and/or some of their dealers near where you'll be?

There's plenty but TBH with five weeks out there I'd be tempted to do a few other things and see a bit if the country. Some amazing sites to see

Yes! The area around Richards Bay isn't great for riding though, flat, sandy, hot and humid. You will be blown away be the amount of riding near Pietermaritzburg though, especially just north of there, around Howick and Hilton. There are miles of singletrack in the local forests, and riding is a very popular past time in the evenings and weekends. I would recommend meeting up with some locals instead of riding alone, armed bike-jackings aren't uncommon so riding in a group is advised. If you need some contacts in that area let me know.

Not really loving Santa's Banter there!

Nick JB- definitely hear you there! I'm told there's a good social life where I'm going to be working. I've never tried diving but hear it's pretty cool there too.

Happybiker, contacts would be really helpful. I plan to hire a car or van when I'm there, so evening riding will hopefully be on the cards as well as weekends in Pietermaritzburg. Is it OK to drop you an email?

Only for IronMan South Africa in Port Elizabeth, so not necessarily quite the sort of riding you had in mind!

Cheers, Rich

Just look at the Strava Heat Map to see where people are riding.
